About Drew

Timeline  | My Sense of Humor

I was born in 1987 in St. Louis, MO, and grew up in the metro area with 3 younger sisters. I wore baseball hats backwards as often as my parents would let me (apparently one can get scalp fungus) and spent a lot of time outside, including riding horses and playing softball.

After high school I immediately went to a small, public liberal arts university about 3 hours from home to get a bachelors of science in chemistry. With 2.5 years of computational chemistry research and a minor in computer science I finished undergrad and headed to the Twin Cities for graduate school.

All along the way, I’ve been masculine. When the first puberty I went through didn’t flesh out quite right, I was left with a lot of lingering feelings that my body no longer belonged to me. I grew up into a young man, in a completely female body.

Now, I’ve taken steps to comfortably be myself in my own body. The first step was to dig myself out from all of the gendered rules and expectations on myself because of my body and on my body because of myself. There are more details about my gender transition under the timeline and tucked in the many pages of this blog, but to summarize- my body chemistry is that of a male and I had a surgery that reconstructed my chest to be masculine (top surgery). Legally the government sees me as a male. Society sees me as a male. Best of all, I see myself as a male.
